Pirate Week: Backyard Treasure Hunt

DAY ONE: TREASURE HUNT

This week is Pirate week for us..well we actually started it on Friday…everyday for a whole week we are going to do something(s) “pirate-y”. Both my boys LOVE Pirates…My 5 year old (pictured) isn’t dressed up in honor of “Pirate Week”…this is one of the costumes in his normal rotation.

First thing I did was make a pirate map. I took some drawing paper and rubbed it with a few coffee grinds and water to make it appear old and I antiqued the edges. I took a marker and added landmarks from our back yard that the boys would recognize. I tore the map into 3 sections. I rolled up the first section in a scroll and tied it with a ribbon and left it for him to find in the morning. (I also added a personal note from Captain Hook)

That first section led him to the next piece of the map which led him to the next …and finally “X” marks the spot…. the treasure!

You can go all out on the treasure part of this (my Dad did a treasure hunt for my 5 year old at the beach this year and he got all kinds of goodies)…I did this on a whim…so I just took a brown paper bag and filled in with “booty”…loose change (he was saving up for a new Skylander and I knew this would be appreciated). He was so pumped when he found the treasure.

(By the way…Little Brother wanted no part of this….he was in a mood)

He took his booty inside and we counted the money and added it to his money jar….and he did have enough for his Skylander. :)

He loved this. He wanted to do another treasure hunt right away. He has carried around the maps all weekend. So it was a total hit!
