Father’s Day Craft Project: Make a Hand Print Tree

If you are still looking for a Father’s Day gift(s) from the children, here is a last minute, inexpensive, relatively easy and fairly quick craft project for the little ones…(with assistance from an adult of course)

You probably already have everything you need…

Supplies:

Craft Paper (We used brown)

Pencil

Black Marker

Black, Gray &/or Brown Crayons

At least 3 different colors of Craft Paint (We used acrylic)

Plate (for paint)

Picture Frame

Directions

Draw a tree trunk and branches on your craft paper using your black marker (go in with pencil first if you are a perfectionist)

Then color or paint your trunk or branches…we used black and gray crayon to give it a bit of dimension. I think black paint would also look nice, but the crayon gave it a very childlike quality IMO.

Then add your first paint color to your plate and have you child dip and coat his/her hand

Then simply have your child press his/her hand around the top of the tree.

Let the first color/coat dry, then repeat with a different color until you have the desired look.

We did 4 coats of 3 colors…we started and finished with the green.

Then you can have your child sign or put a personal message at the bottom

Framing

I was flying by the seat of my pants when I decided to do this craft…so I was not thinking about the size of our masterpiece (very artsy of me …we were just “feeling” the tree- you dig)…but if you are considering framing your work of art…then you may want to keep the size of your piece in mind…we had to chop off part of our tree to fit it in the frame which was a 11 X 14.

I know you can grab an 8×10 frame at Dollar Tree for a buck….I however was not near a Dollar Tree. I grabbed the frame at Dollar General for $6. There were less expensive options, but I didn’t like those…. (cough- frame snob)

Liam loved the way it turned out and has already given it to his Dad….he is so excited that Matt is taking to work to put up in his office…and believe me Liam will check and make sure it is there next time we visit Dad at work. :)
