Heart of Haiti: Great Mother’s Day Gifts for a Great Cause

This year I had a chance to attend Blissdom where I met the wonderful folks from Macy’s Heart of Haiti.

Heart of Haiti, a “trade, not aid” program providing sustainable income to Haitian artisans struggling to rebuild their lives and support their families after the 2010 earthquake.

What is Macy’s Heart of Haiti?

  • Heart of Haiti is a “Trade, Not Aid” initiative launched by artist and social entrepreneur, Willa Shalit, The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund and Macy’s. Already, Heart of Haiti has led to employment of 750 artists in Haiti, providing financial benefits for an estimated 8,500 people in the country.
  • Each item is a one-of-a-kind design and handmade by a Haitian master artisan from raw materials such as recycled oil drums, wrought iron, papier-mâché and stone. The collection features more than 40 home decor items including quilts, metalwork, ceramics, jewelry and paintings and is made almost entirely from recycled and sustainable items such as old cement bags, cardboard, oil drums and local gommier wood.
  • Heart of Haiti products are available exclusively online at Macy’s.com. Most items range from $25-$60.

Additional Info on Haiti

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and despite the devastating earthquake; people there are filled with hope and a desire to improve their lives through employment. Options are very limited in this country.  The Heart of Haiti initiative is one that espouses “Trade, Not Aid,” providing Haitian artisans with an opportunity to make a living, feed their families and pay their children’s school fees (school in Haiti is not free).

Personal Story

The wonderful folks from Heart of Haiti gave me this fantastic necklace. It is truly a conversation starter type of piece…. and it is going to my Mother-in-Law. My in-laws spent time volunteering in Haiti (She is a Nurse Practitioner and my Father-in-Law is a Doctor). She has some great stories. She loved the people so much she always talks of going back. She truly has a Heart for Haiti.

I asked her to tell me what she remembers most about Haiti and she said “the people”. She told me they have nothing, they don’t even know where there next meal will come from, yet they will share whatever they have with you. She said they are the most grateful people you will ever meet. She truly has much love and admiration for the Haitian people.

This Mother’s Day, you may consider giving a unique, handcrafted gift from Heart of Haiti…not only do they have some great items Mom is sure to love- the proceeds go to a terrific cause…you gotta love that!

New Rimmel London Coupons + CVS Deal + My 2 Cents

If you like Rimmel Cosmetics and I do…CVS does have them on sale BOGO 50% thru 4/7 (that is Saturday) with your CVS card….

AND…if you pop over here…you can print two different $1/1 Rimmel Cosmetic Coupons (I found one on page 3 and one on page 5)…they do print with the above images on them as 2 separate coupons…

…though the verbiage appears to be the same…I was able to print 2 of each…so 4 coupons total!!!

My 2 Cents

As you may know…I love me some beauty products…I spend a lot of time and money trying to look as good as I did 10 years ago…and I use both the fru-fru brands and the frugal brands and I have to say I really am loving (and keep coming back to) the Rimmel London Glam Eyes Lash Flirt Mascara (I like the tiny wands personally as well as the formaula)….anyhoo…I cheat on this mascara…then I come back to it…cheat…come back…so has been my relationship with this mascara for a little over a year. I should be more faithful I know. This is a good mascara.

NEW Maybelline Color Tattoo & Baby Lips Coupons + Deal Idea + My 2 Cents

Yay! So I love waking up to New Cosmetic coupons (it’s the small things in life isn’t it)…especially coupons for products I like!

$1.00 off Maybelline Color Tattoo 24HR$1.00 off MAYBELLINE NEW YORK BABY LIPS™ LIP BALM

You can currently print 2 New Maybelline Coupons:

$1.00 off Maybelline Color Tattoo 24HR (Direct Link)

$1.00 off MAYBELLINE NEW YORK BABY LIPS™ LIP BALM (Direct Link)

As you can see by the top pick I have both these items in my cosmetic stash.

My 2 cents:

I do like the Baby Lips- it is a very smooth lip balm and it has a 20 SPF! There are several flavors you can choose from.

Color Tattoo 24HR Eye Color- I bought this last week in two shades (Audacious Asphalt & Tough as Taupe). I usually stay away from cream based eye shadows, because they like to crease on me… but I like the highly pigmented colors and read a couple good reviews (and I had 2 coupons) so I gave it a whirl… and I am glad I did. I do use The Benefit STAY DON’T STRAY as a primer first (you can check it out here) and I apply it with the Definer Brush #15 from Smashbox (you can check it out here)…it is my favorite brush and I have had this brush for at least 7 or 8 years so the $24 investment was worth it for me (or whatever the price was when I purchased it)

Does it crease…well yes a little..especially after I spent a hour gardening here in the South…and if I apply it in the morning, I touch it up in the afternoon/evening…but let’s face it…everything needs a touch up by then.

I really like this product- very blend-able, I love the 2 colors I have…especially the Tough as Taupe….if you want to try it…now is a great time with the coupons…

Don’t forget about the CVS Deal I told you about here.

Spend $10 Get $3 ECB- looks as though these are included in the sale. These are normally priced around $6-$8 each. There is another coupon link here…I have already printed these…so if it doesn’t work for you please let me know.

GIVEAWAY: One Reader to WIN a Pack of Hallmark Cards (& more….)

My Somewhat Brief Rant

(Of course you can skip this “rant” and scroll down to the giveaway if you prefer…you will not be tested on this portion. :) )

SO…I am going to get on a soapbox for a moment here (I rarely do this)…I think it needs to be said and well….I am going to say it…

Let me digress…I love email, texting, facebook and twitter. I will be honest….I might even be mildly addicted. It is fast and convenient and can be done mostly at my leisure….BUT… I think it all gives us a false sense of connection at times….and it is subtle and a bit sad.

I think about facebook…it is fun to see what everyone is doing, see pictures and whatnot….but “Liking” a status or commenting on what your friend has posted isn’t really a connection…at least it isn’t to me. I still want my friends & family to occasionally see me in person or call me on the phone…occasionally…

And what about cards and letters….

The handwritten letter has pretty much gone the way of the Dodo Bird and the Dinosaur- extinct- gone- history. Did you know that schools are not even teaching cursive!!! What? Yes! My Sister-in-Law is a middle school science teacher and her students can’t make out the words on the board unless she prints.

Ah the Greeting Card…one thing I LOVE to receive is a fantastic, well thought-out Card…not an eCard (sorry, that didn’t take you much time or energy-boo) I want a real, honest to goodness paper card…a card that you perused the card aisles for…and perhaps you laughed and/or cried…or both… (possibility out loud while people looked at you as if you were a freak)… then you found it!….the card that said “This is so Jessica” ….and when I receive it,  I will laugh &/or cry (but I will be in the privacy of my own home so only my family will make fun of me)…and all those sideways looks you received from complete strangers while you were making a scene in public over a greeting card…well my friend…it will all be worth it!

And here is something else you may not know about me…the good cards- I keep (and well all of the cards my kids receive) and I put them in a box…and I look through them every couple of years and it is fun.

SO…that is my rant…and this is my plea…take a little time to disconnect from the technology and reconnect with the people you love who are using it- call them up, make plans for coffee, write them a letter in cursive, or send them a great greeting card you handpicked just because.

Hallmark’s New “Tell Them” Campaign

So this brings up the new Campaign from Hallmark. I met the fabulous folks from Hallmark at Blissdom this year….so much fun. Below you can check out the campaign commercial that they shared in their suite…it  shines a light on what the Tell Them promotion is all about.

If you want to get in on the “reconnecting” you can pop over and share your vow on Hallmark’s Tell Them Facebook page here

Plus, currently after you share your vow you will be linked to a coupon: $2 off Any 3 card purchase from Hallmark (min $2 required- see coupon for complete details)

Check out these super cute Hallmark cards I picked up at Blissdom. I had such a great time looking at all the fantastic greeting cards.
