DIY: Mossy Letter Door Decor

Guest Post by Megan

With the arrival of spring comes the motivation to clean, tidy up the yard, plant new flowers, and decorate. I have a wreath for every season, except spring. As I was wandering the floral department of JoAnn’s, I made the decision I didn’t want a wreath afterall. I wanted a moss covered letter with a few flowers.

g1

So, armed with my JoAnn’s app on my phone, I went shopping and bought the following items…

Supplies:

- 12″ paper mâché letter G for $2.69 after using a 40% off coupon
- Super moss cloth originally $8.99 but discounted to $4.50 with a 50% off coupon
- 12″ daisy bunch on sale for $1.49

Total cost for my main supplies: $8.68 before tax.

Other supplies I used but already had were a hot glue gun, glue sticks, and an exacto knife for trimming the moss.

Directions:

g2

1. Lay out moss face down, then place letter on top backwards.

g3

2. Carefully cover the sides of the letter with moss, making cuts around corners. Think of it as being similar to wrapping an awkward shaped gift. Use hot glue to secure moss in place as you go along.

Remember to save the scraps of moss you cut away. You can use these pieces to fill in bald spots on your letter. Moss is quite forgiving and it’s difficult to tell where I patched mine up.

g4

3. Decorate according to your preference. I chose to use daisies and kept it simple. I think the letter looks nice without any additions, but I did want something to make it stand out. You could use ribbon, burlap, fake eggs, a bird’s nest…it’s really up to you!

DIY Brown Sugar Scrub

Here is a fun and simple homemade scrub recipe…you probably already have all the ingredients in your pantry and it is super inexpensive to make…great to treat yourself or to give as gifts.

Ingredients:

1 cup brown sugar
1/3 (+) cup extra virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons honey

Directions:

Take the 1 cup of brown sugar and mix in the 1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil….I used a bit more. Then add in your 2 Tablespoons of honey. Stir to mix and wah-la!

I do not know how long this keeps…I have read it will keep longer if you do not introduce water into the mixture…so if you are planning on taking this in the shower…perhaps you can use a small wooden spoon or mini spatula. I would just give it the smell test and use your best judgement. I have had mine for about a week and a half and it still looks and smells great.

I also have some cute labels for you to print if you like!

You should be able to right click on the label below and then print the image (Ctrl P). You will need to use label paper of course.

No time to make your own scrub, you can check out these scrubshere

DIY Toy Car Tote Tutorial

Guest Post by Megan

I made this hot wheels car tote as a birthday gift for a friend’s son. It is fairly simple to make, however the details can be quite time consuming. You can make this project as detailed as you want or more simple. Either way, it is really cute!

To make your very own car tote, you will need the following supplies:

- Two 17×10″ pieces of fabric in coordinating colors (I chose blue and green)

- One 17×6″ piece of fabric to make the pockets for the cars (again, I chose blue, however it would be cute to incorporate a fun car fabric as well)

- One 17×3″ piece of black/gray fabric or felt for the road

- Scrap fabric to make applique if desired (I made the letter “C” for the little boy’s name using some seersucker fabric I had available)

- Items to add details to the tote. I used ribbon alongside the road to provide more clean lines and I used some yellow binding for the dashes in the road.

Step 1:

Cut fabric pieces to size and fold in half lengthwise raw edge to raw edge (except piece being used for road). Iron in place. Unfold the fabric that will be used as the outside and inside fabric of the tote, however leave the pocket fabric folded for sewing.

Step 2:

Take pocket fabric piece and place on top of inside lining piece arranging raw edges together. Pin in place. Now is a good time to also mark where you will stitch each pocket by placing a pin every 2.75″.

Step 3:

Sew the pocket piece around the perimeter followed by sewing each pocket separately. Add the details you desire to the lining piece at this time. I sewed the road in place, then added grosgrain ribbon to each side because my fabric was fraying and looked sloppy. The ribbon added a pop of color and some clean lines. I then sewed yellow dashes to the road.

Step 4:

If you choose to add an applique, take the 17″x10″ piece of outer fabric and sew applique below the fold which should be visible in the fabric from ironing it.

Step 5:

Place outer fabric on top of lining fabric right sides (or pretty sides) together and pin in place. Sew around perimeter leaving a 5″ opening on one of the shorter sides to turn the fabric right side out.

Step 6:

Turn right side out and stitch fabric closed. The original tutorial used an elastic hairband and button as a closure, however I chose to leave this step out. The cars seem to stay in place well by simple folding the tote. I wanted to try a velcro fastener, but I couldn’t decide on a good placement for one without it affecting the look of the project.

Isn’t it adorable?! VROOM, VROOM!!!

DIY Crayon Roll Tutorial

Guest Post by Megan

Crayon storage isn’t so bad. Most of us dump them in a box of some sort and pull them out whenever the kids want to color. Traveling with crayons is different. Sure, you can throw some in a plastic baggy and go, but eventually the plastic gets worn out. A good solution to this problem is to make a crayon roll. Crayon rolls are fabulous for transporting crayons in the car, to a restaurant, church, or the doctor’s office.

In the past, I shy’d away from this sort of project because I assumed all crayon rolls had to be super long to accommodate all the colors. I wasn’t interested in doing that. My view has changed as I have recently seen crayon rolls small enough to hold 4 crayons (they look more like a small wallet) and found tutorials featuring crayon rolls with a smaller number of compartments.

The crayon roll I’m featuring will hold 16 crayons. I made my compartments a little wider than the tutorial suggests so that it can accommodate larger crayons (for the small child) or 2 crayons per pocket for typical size crayons.

You will need the following:

- Two 5″x16.5″ strips of fabric
- One 6″x16.5″ strip of coordinating fabric (for the pockets)
- 24″ ribbon

If you are familiar with my tutorials, I often skip ironing fabric (gasp!) for many of my sewing projects, however I recommend taking the extra time to iron the fabric for this project. It looks better and is easier to sew.

Directions:

1. Take 6″x16.5″ coordinating fabric and fold in half down the length of the fabric with the pretty sides showing and iron along the crease. This will be the pocket.

2. Arrange the pocket strip on top one of the 5″x16.5″ fabric strips aligning the raw edges together (pretty side up). Pin together.

3. Using a ruler and fabric pen, find the middle of the pocket strip and mark it. From here, draw a line every inch along the top of the pocket.

4. Sew a straight line at each place marked along the pocket, remembering to back stitch at the top of the pocket and at the bottom. This is the most tedious part of the project.

Next, you’ll want to trim all the thread.

5. Fold the ribbon in half and pin at the fold to the crayon roll (see picture). Sew in place. Please note: Since the ribbon will be tied and untied repeatedly, I like to ensure it is secured well, so I do a straight stitch down the ribbon, backstitch, then zig zag stitch on top of that. I don’t want my ribbon going anywhere!

6. Carefully arrange the fabric strip with pocket attached to the remaining 5″x16.5″ fabric strip, pretty sides together and pin in place (make sure ribbon is tucked nicely inside)

7. Sew around the perimeter of the rectangle remembering to leave the short side (without the ribbon attachment) open for turning the crayon roll right side out.

8. Once crayon roll is turned right side out, iron along the seams to flatten it out. Sew open end closed, tucking in the raw edges.

Now, the crayon roll is complete!

Nice and neatly rolled up. Coloring, anyone?

DIY Pretty Bubble Gum Necklace

I originally found the idea for these Bubble Gum Necklaces on One Charming Party and I fell in love…as you may know I have 2 boys…BUT my 6 year old does have a “girlfriend”… who he loves to lavish with gifts…so we made one for her…and by “we”…well I mean “me”…this is an adults only project

All you need:

Large Pretty Gum Balls (like these)

Ribbon

Skewer/Needle

Towel

How I Did it:

First, pierce one side of the gumball CAREFULLY with a metal skewer.  Hold the top of the gum ball steady as you guide the skewer about half way through the gumball. I also used a towel to prevent slipping.

Next, flip the gum ball over and pierce another hole directly opposite of the first hole. If you try to poke a hole straight through both sides at once the gum ball may crack.

Finally, use a large needle or the end of your skewer and thread the ribbon through the gum balls.  Be sure to tie a knot between each gum ball as you string it.

You can purchase gum balls on Amazon. I found the ones I used at my local craft store.

DIY: Tinted Mason Jars

I came across this idea and instantly knew I had to try it! I love the look of tinted Mason Jars…

This is a super easy….

What you will need:

Mason Jar (or glass jar of choice)

Mod Podge (I used Gloss)

Food Color

Water

 Directions:

Pour about 1/4 a cup of Mod Podge into the jar and then add several drops of food coloring

Start turning the jar so you are coating the inside with the colored Mod Podge

Keep swirling, working your way up to the mouth of the jar.

Once your jar is completely coated on the inside, you will want to get as much of the excess Mod Podge out as you can….so you don’t have a puddle settle at the bottom of your jar.

The color will be opaque (see above)

Next I set my oven on the lowest temperature setting…mine went down to 170.

I baked for 20 minutes

Removed carefully and allowed to cool.

I turned mine into candle holders….though they would also look lovely with flowers or simply on their own.

I do not believe these are waterproof and these are not food safe…but I suppose you could fill with individually wrapped candy…and tie off with a ribbon for a lovely gift.
